Deego Q&A

Q). How things with you?
I can’t complain, lately I’ve just been locked in at the studio working on some new stuff. Gotta keep my foot on the pedal, y’know.
Q). Where did the whole Deego journey all begin?
I have always been tapped into the Rap and Hip Hop music scene. My older brothers were huge music heads who used to put me onto a lot of hip hop music from rappers like Biggie and Tupac – to Grime MCs like Wiley and Dizzee Rascal. I’m also of Nigerian descent so Nigerian music was played a lot in my household, especially Fuji Music. Rapping for me started out as something I did for fun and didn’t really take seriously. Where I grew up everyone rapped a little because it gave you some sort of credibility. I used to go to school and drop little freestyles in the playground in front of my friends and watch them go crazy over the flows and punchlines that I came with. I was a natural at it, probably because I was good at telling stories and putting words together. Next thing I know I’m on a computer recording these bars with a cheap microphone and posting it on Facebook for people to listen to. I got mad good reception from some of these tracks, and then people would come up to me and ask me to drop more. I knew at that point that I was onto something and just decided to pursue it further… and now we’re here.
Q). Your album ‘Layers’ is available now. How has the response for that been?
Its been dope so far. People are really digging this project and I’m definitely feeling all the love. Couple tracks got spun on radio too, shout out to Reprezent and Whoa FM. Yeah, it’s been a great introduction for what’s to come.
Q). Whats it like being in the studio with Deego?
I’m the type of person that feeds off the energy in the room. If the environment is buzzing and energetic, I’m likely to channel that into an upbeat, high-energy song. If its chill and mellow, then I’ll create music to reflect that. In any case, I’m just pure vibes. I may bring a maggy (magnum drink) just to make the creative process more fun.
Q). How would you describe your sound?
Hard to say because I find I’m very versatile and can go between many genres. I would say that my preferred style is like a blend of old school hip hop and grime with a dash of neo soul.
Q). Is there anybody who you would love to do a track with?
I’ve always said I would like to do a song with Jill Scott or Rapsody. But closer to home would have to be Wretch 32 or Kojo Funds.
Q). Who is your biggest influence?
It might be cliché to say this, but my biggest influence is my circle of friends, my day ones. They constantly keep me on my toes and inspire me to push beyond my limits. I have so many talented people around me that I don’t need to look far for inspiration.
Q). Why did you choose to get into the music industry?
I feel like music chose me if I’m being honest. It just something that’s innate, and I have always been good at. I once heard that the saddest thing in life is wasted talent, I might be taking that from a movie called “A Bronx Tale” haha, but that resonated with me, so I try to live my life in a way where I don’t become a statistic.
Q). What would you say is your biggest achievement in music so far?
My biggest achievement in music so far is dropping my project “Layers” which is out now by the way so go stream that. But completing that project and seeing people’s reactions to it has been a top tier feeling.
Q). What can we expect from you for the rest of the year?
More tunes and more shows. I also shot a video to my song Jiggie off the project which should be dropping soon so look out for that.
