Libsey Q&A

Q.) How things with you?

Pretty good actually! I've been working on promotion for the next album, as well as working on collaborations for the next project after the album.

Q.) Where did the whole Libsey journey all begin?

So truthfully it all started about 12 years ago. I've always loved hip-hop, but the state of music at the time just wasn't cutting it for me. I wanted to make music that I wanted to listen to, music that spoke to that "outcast" side of society. So I wrote a bunch of different remixes on industry beats, put out my first mixtape around 2011 (and it was trash btw lol). I took a break from releasing music for about 6 years due to not being able to pay for studio time.

Around 2017, I came across an app called BandLab, and it was basically a studio right on my phone. And since then, I've released 16 projects, and I'm getting ready to release my 17th and 18th full-length projects this year.

Q.) Your single ‘Morphin' Time’ is available now. How has the response for that been?

The response has been pretty great actually! I typically produce all of my own beats, so it was weird to release a song that I didn't produce myself.

The beat was produced by Anno Domini Beats, and they're actually responsible for a couple of the songs on the new album, including the song "Trippie" featuring Rittz (formerly of Strange Music).

Q.) Whats it like being in the studio with Libsey?

Well 9 times out of 10, it looks like Snoop is in the studio with how much weed smoke is in the air lol.

But I have my own personal studio at home, so realistically it's a genuinely chill vibe. Typically I'll go through beats (the heavier the 808, the better), and I'll typically have something playing on another monitor for inspiration (anime, kung-fu movies, Pokemon battles, real random stuff). Then about an hour or 3 later, I'll have a full song or 2 done.

Q.) How would you describe your sound?

So I'm very big in wordplay, as well as real heavy beats. So to compare it to mainstream artists, I'd say: wordplay like Lil Wayne, with beats like $uicideBoy$, with a splash of flair like Mac Miller. Oh, and with an attitude like Eminem, cause I tend to piss people off with the shit I say on a beat lol.

Q.) Is there anybody who you would love to do a track with?

Oh man, the list I could write lol. I'd say my top 3 though, would have to be Lil Wayne, Montana of 300, and Coast Contra.

Q.) Who is your biggest influence?

Biggest influences would be who I mentioned before: Lil Wayne, Mac Miller, and $uicideBoy$. Again, I could write a list of artists that inspire me, but those would be the big 3 for me.

Q.) Why did you choose to get into the music industry?

I've had musicians in my family all my life, so music seemed natural for me to get into. My uncle, Hank Perry, has been in metal bands for 30+ years locally here in New Bedford. And my mother is really big into the Oldies, so I've listened to different genres of music for years. Hip-hop just spoke to me on a personal level, so it felt natural to pursue music, especially in a genre a care about.

Q.) What would you say is your biggest achievement in music so far?

I mean I've been featured in The New York Times, I've opened for Bizzare from D-12 and Montana of 300, I've met numerous artists and performed too many shows to count.

But my biggest achievement, in my opinion, is doing this all on my own. No team, no backers, no co-sign. 16 projects in 5 years, all recorded and produced myself, only improving myself as time goes on. Being truly independent and still being able to make an impact, that would be my biggest achievement so far.

Q.) What can we expect from you for the rest of the year?

I'm going to be performing at the 3rd Eye Open this Saturday in New Bedford, it'll be my 4th festival this year. I also have my 5th studio album, "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", dropping on all platforms October 7th, with features from Jarren Benton & Rittz. Other than that, just more shows and a surprise project for the end of the year.
